Invercargill is New Zealand’s southern most city. There is a lot of history here and usually plenty of wind too. The main attractions are Bluff and a day or overnight trip to Stewart Island.
Being a city there is almost everything you could ever need, but being at the southern end of the country and open to the south Atlantic Sea, it can get cold and very windy. There’s plenty of accommodation on offer for all budgets.
It’s easy to spend a day in Bluff. There’s the lookout at the top of the hill, the cafe’s down by the bay and the bay walk.
From the lookout you can see way out into the Southern Ocean and then over Tiwai Point Aluminium Smelter.
After your time in Invercargill you can head towards the east coast up State Highway One towards Dunedin. Take some time out to explore the Catlins.
There are some of the best motorbike riding roads in New Zealand around here.
Each year the city hosts the Burt Munro Classic to celebrate Burt’s “World’s Fastest Indian. This is a week long series of motor sports events, focusing mainly on motorbikes, although does include stock cars I believe.
The city now has a huge motor transport museum and motorcycle display which are both world class.
